What it really is

PrestaShop — open-source e-commerce platform with free self-hosted and paid managed tiers.

Our take

PrestaShop is a mature open-source e-commerce platform used by hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide, with particular strength in Europe and Latin America. The DB lists it as purely 'Free', which understates the full model: the Classic edition is free to download and self-host, but PrestaShop also offers a managed Hosted plan from €24/month and an Enterprise tier from ~€2,115/month — making it freemium, not simply free. Technical skill and external hosting costs are the real entry tax on the Classic tier.

Why we rate it

Unmatched value for developer-led teams: full source-code ownership, a deep module ecosystem, and zero platform licensing. The Hosted tier bridges the gap for less-technical merchants at a fair mid-market price, while Enterprise delivers genuine scalability for high-volume operations.

The catch

Classic demands real technical skill — hosting provisioning, SSL, security patching, and version upgrades all fall on the merchant. Module costs accumulate quickly (€30–€550 each), quality varies widely across the marketplace, and migrating away from the Hosted tier requires a full data migration.

Best for
European and international merchants needing native multi-language and multi-currency
Developers and agencies building custom or white-label storefronts
Mid-market businesses escaping high SaaS platform licensing fees
Not good for
Non-technical merchants who want zero server or maintenance overhead
Teams needing a fully operational store in hours without developer involvement
Businesses that require a single, all-inclusive fixed monthly price
Friction report
Time to value
Slow (Classic): server provisioning, theme setup, and module configuration required before first sale. Moderate (Hosted): guided onboarding with a 14-day trial cuts time-to-launch significantly.
Scale breakpoint
Hosting infrastructure and module licensing costs scale non-linearly at high catalog volumes or traffic spikes; large stores often require expensive dedicated or cloud server upgrades.
Walled garden
Low (Classic): full source-code access and portable data exports. Moderate (Hosted): switching away requires migrating off PrestaShop's managed infrastructure.
