What it really is

iPlum — second business phone line and VoIP app for mobile devices.

Our take

iPlum is a mobile-first VoIP service that adds a dedicated business number (calls, texts, voicemail, IVR) to your existing smartphone — not a CRM or sales tool as the DB categorises it. Three tiers exist: Standard ($8.99/user/mo annual), Professional with HIPAA/BAA ($14.99/user/mo annual), and Enterprise with call recording ($25.99/user/mo annual). The DB's $8/mo entry price is approximately correct for the annual Standard plan.

Why we rate it

iPlum punches above its price in regulated verticals: HIPAA compliance with a BAA at under $15/user/mo is genuinely rare. The mobile-only approach keeps setup friction near zero for sole proprietors and small teams.

The catch

The 2,500 monthly credit cap on Standard (one credit per call minute or text) can surprise heavy users, and layering in toll-free numbers, API access, and excess credits pushes the real monthly cost well beyond the headline price.

Best for
Solo healthcare or legal practitioners needing HIPAA-compliant texting
Freelancers and consultants wanting a business number without a second SIM
Small teams needing call recording and compliance archiving on a budget
Not good for
High-volume call centres where per-credit billing becomes expensive
Teams needing deep CRM or helpdesk integration out of the box
Businesses requiring a full UCaaS suite (video, chat, files) in one platform
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: download the app, pick a number, and make calls within minutes — no hardware required.
Scale breakpoint
Credit caps and per-user pricing make costs unpredictable beyond ~10 users or high call volumes; Enterprise tier needed for call recording adds another jump.
Walled garden
Moderate: number porting out costs $19.99/number, and call recordings and text archives are tied to iPlum's portal, limiting portability.
