What it really is

VWO (Visual Website Optimizer) — enterprise A/B testing and conversion rate optimization platform.

Our take

VWO is a mature, comprehensive CRO suite covering A/B testing, multivariate testing, heatmaps, session recordings, and personalization. The DB entry price of $49/month is significantly wrong — the Growth plan starts at approximately $314/month billed annually for 10K MTUs. The DB's 'freemium' label is also outdated: VWO's free-forever plan has been retired in most markets; the platform now offers a 30-day trial only. This is a paid, usage-priced platform.

Why we rate it

One of the most mature CRO platforms available; covers the full experimentation stack from visual editor to server-side feature flags and mobile app insights.

The catch

MTU-based pricing creates a 'success tax' — costs rise as traffic grows. DB listed $49/mo which is nearly 7x below the real entry price.

Best for
Mid-market ecommerce and SaaS teams running high-frequency CRO experiments
Product teams needing server-side feature flag experimentation
Digital agencies managing multi-client optimization programs
Not good for
Small businesses or startups on tight budgets (entry ~$314/mo)
Teams wanting a simple free A/B testing tool
Solo marketers running only occasional experiments
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: 30-day trial available; visual editor gets a first test live quickly, but MTU tracking requires a JS snippet deployed by engineering.
Scale breakpoint
MTU overages immediately pause all active tests; pricing jumps are significant between Growth and Pro tiers.
Walled garden
Moderate: experiment history and heatmap data lives in VWO; analytics integrations exist but historical data migration is lossy.
