What it really is

ThinkWave — cloud-based K–12 school management system and gradebook for teachers and schools.

Our take

ThinkWave is a focused K–12 gradebook and school information system, not a project-management tool as the DB categorises it. It offers a perpetual-free individual gradebook for teachers plus a paid School Management System (SMS) that adds parent portals, report cards, and administration tools. The DB lists $19/mo, but actual entry pricing is $17/mo (1–15 students) with a 30-day free trial; there is also a permanently free standalone gradebook for individual teachers.

Why we rate it

ThinkWave's enrollment-scaled pricing is unusually honest — schools pay in proportion to size, so a 30-student operation isn't subsidising enterprise features it doesn't need. The free individual gradebook also lowers the barrier to entry and lets solo teachers evaluate the product without any commitment.

The catch

Feature set is intentionally lean — no built-in LMS, no advanced analytics, and no native integrations with major SIS or HR platforms. Growing districts will likely outgrow it.

Best for
Small independent K–12 schools on a tight budget
Individual teachers who need a free, permanent online gradebook
Schools wanting fast SMS deployment without IT overhead
Not good for
Large districts needing a full SIS with HR and finance modules
Schools requiring deep LMS integration (Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.)
Institutions that need advanced data analytics or custom reporting
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: 30-day free trial requires no credit card; teachers can start recording grades the same day they sign up.
Scale breakpoint
Pricing scales linearly with enrollment, so costs climb predictably but can become significant for schools above 300–400 students compared to district-level SIS alternatives.
Walled garden
Moderate: data export options exist (grades, reports) but workflows are tightly coupled to the ThinkWave interface; migrating to a new SIS requires manual data extraction.
