What it really is

PerfectIt — Microsoft Word add-in for editorial consistency and style-guide checking.

Our take

PerfectIt is a laser-focused consistency checker that catches hyphenation conflicts, abbreviation drift, capitalisation mismatches, and formatting irregularities across long Word documents. It is not a grammar or spelling corrector — that's intentional: it does one thing (consistency) exceptionally well. The DB listed $79/year, but the actual individual price is $70/user/year; the DB price_tier 'free_trial' has been corrected to 'paid' (a 14-day trial exists, but there is no permanent free tier).

Why we rate it

Catches the class of errors that grammar tools miss entirely — inconsistent hyphenation, mismatched abbreviation definitions, capitalisation drift across 100-page documents. For editing professionals, even one caught error per document pays for the annual licence many times over.

The catch

Works exclusively in Microsoft Word (Windows and Mac); no Google Docs, no browser, no Scrivener. Teams outside the Word ecosystem are locked out entirely.

Best for
Legal and compliance teams ensuring uniform terminology across long briefs
Technical and medical writers enforcing in-house or regulatory style guides
Freelance editors handling multiple client documents with different style requirements
Not good for
Writers wanting grammar or spelling correction (PerfectIt does not do this)
Teams working primarily in Google Docs or browser-based editors
Fiction authors or casual writers who do not need formal style-guide enforcement
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: installs as a Word add-in in minutes; first consistency check runs immediately on any open document.
Scale breakpoint
Performance slows on very long documents (100k+ words); per-seat cost scales linearly until Enterprise tier (40+ seats).
Walled garden
High: all workflows live inside Microsoft Word; no export of style-sheet logic to other platforms.
