Conversion Gems editorial verdict
From $2.50/mo (IPv6) or $3.50/mo (IPv4)
Features8/10
8 - Broad IaaS surface: VPS, bare metal, GPU, Kubernetes, managed DBs, CDN, object storage. Lacks managed app layer (PaaS).
Value9/10
9 - Among the lowest VPS entry prices in the industry; hourly billing with no long-term contracts; competitive GPU rates vs cloud giants.
Ease of use7/10
7 - Clean control panel and fast deploys, but fully unmanaged — requires real Linux/DevOps skills to operate at scale.
Ecosystem7/10
7 - 32 global DCs, one-click app marketplace, Terraform/API support; smaller native integration library than AWS/GCP.
Support6/10
6 - Ticket-based support; community docs are solid but live support can lag on complex issues.

What it really is

Vultr — developer-focused cloud infrastructure platform offering VPS, bare metal, GPU instances, managed databases, and object storage across 32 global data centers.

Our take

Vultr is a serious AWS/GCP alternative for developers and SMBs who want hourly-billed cloud infrastructure without hyperscaler complexity or pricing. The DB lists entry at $5/mo, but actual Cloud Compute starts at $2.50/mo (IPv6-only) or $3.50/mo with IPv4 — production minimum is closer to $3.50. The platform covers the full IaaS stack: VPS, bare metal, GPUs, Kubernetes, managed databases, CDN, and object storage.

Why we rate it

Vultr punches above its weight with a full IaaS product line, honest hourly billing, and some of the most competitive VPS prices in the industry. The October 2025 VX1 AMD EPYC-Turin launch adds dedicated CPU performance at aggressive price points.

The catch

No managed services for most workloads — you handle OS patching, security, and maintenance. Support can lag on complex issues, and stopped instances continue to accrue charges until destroyed.

Best for
Developers and DevOps teams deploying web apps, APIs, or databases on self-managed Linux servers
Startups and SMBs needing global reach without AWS/GCP account complexity or billing surprises
ML/AI workloads requiring on-demand GPU instances (A16 to H100) billed hourly
Not good for
Teams that need fully managed infrastructure or a no-ops PaaS experience
Enterprises requiring SOC 2 / FedRAMP compliance with dedicated support SLAs
Non-technical users — Vultr assumes comfort with SSH, Linux, and server configuration
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: server deploys in under 60 seconds and is SSH-ready almost immediately. Time-to-value depends only on the user's server setup skills, not the platform.
Scale breakpoint
Per-instance pricing and manual fleet management become unwieldy at 20+ servers without automation (Terraform/Ansible). No native auto-scaling outside of Kubernetes.
Walled garden
Low: standard Linux images, full root access, and portable workloads. Snapshots use Vultr-proprietary formats but data remains accessible for export at any time.

AWS EC2 or Google Cloud Compute Engine for enterprise SLAs, compliance certifications, and managed service breadth.

Lighter alternative

Hetzner Cloud or DigitalOcean Droplets for a similarly simple IaaS experience, sometimes at even lower European pricing.
