Turnitin

Turnitin does not offer a free plan or a publicly available free trial. Access is provided through institutional or school-level subscriptions, which are priced via a custom quote based on institution size and the modules required.

Turnitin's AI writing detection model analyses submitted text and generates an AI Writing Report showing what percentage of a document is likely AI-generated. It also flags text that may have been modified by AI bypasser tools designed to make AI output look human-written. The feature is layered into the existing Similarity Report workflow.

Turnitin integrates with major learning management systems — including Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and others — via LTI 1.3. This allows institutions to access Turnitin's suite directly within their existing educational workflows without switching between platforms.

Turnitin is sold as an institutional subscription, so individual teachers and students typically cannot purchase it independently. Access is granted by schools or universities that have licensed the platform. Students in those institutions can use features like Draft Coach through their institution's account.

Turnitin recommends treating the AI Writing Report as one signal in a broader academic integrity assessment rather than definitive proof. The model is tuned for a low false-positive rate, but no AI detector is infallible. Instructors are advised to use the percentage score alongside other context and evidence before drawing conclusions about a student's submission.
