What it really is

Replicate — usage-based cloud API for running and deploying ML models (acquired by Cloudflare, Dec 2025).

Our take

The DB lists Replicate at '$29/month' with a freemium tag — both are wrong. Replicate has never offered monthly subscription tiers; it uses pure pay-per-second compute billing with no minimums or commitments. The $29 figure does not correspond to any published plan. In November 2025 Cloudflare acquired Replicate (deal closed December 1, 2025); as of mid-2026 no pricing changes have been announced. The Developer & Technical category is correct.

Why we rate it

Radical pricing transparency — the same per-second rate whether you run one image or one million makes cost forecasting unusually predictable for prototypes and MVPs.

The catch

No free tier; usage costs accumulate on high-throughput tasks. Cloudflare acquisition introduces future pricing and roadmap uncertainty.

Best for
Developers integrating image, audio, or video AI models via REST API
Research teams running varied model experiments without managing GPUs
Startups prototyping ML features before investing in dedicated inference infrastructure
Not good for
High-volume production inference needing reserved capacity or committed-use discounts
Teams with strict data residency requirements or private model confidentiality needs
Non-technical users without API integration skills
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: API key and one curl command to run a public model; full integration achievable in under an hour for experienced developers.
Scale breakpoint
Unit costs become significant at high prediction volumes; dedicated GPU cloud providers may be cheaper beyond a certain throughput threshold.
Walled garden
Low: models are standard ML formats (PyTorch, ONNX, Cog); no proprietary model lock-in.

Alternatives

Step up

Cloudflare Workers AI or AWS SageMaker for reserved capacity, enterprise SLAs, and data residency controls.

Lighter alternative

Hugging Face Inference API for simpler model access with a free tier for low-volume use.
