What it really is

Linear — high-performance issue tracker and project management tool built for software engineering teams.

Our take

Linear has earned its reputation as the issue tracker engineers actually enjoy using. Its keyboard-first, near-instant UI stands in sharp contrast to Jira's complexity. The DB entry price was missing — paid plans start at $10/user/month (billed yearly), with a genuinely usable free tier capped at 250 issues. Category 'Productivity & Collaboration' is accurate but undersells its dev-tooling identity.

Why we rate it

Linear consistently earns top marks from engineering teams for its speed, opinionated simplicity, and thoughtful sprint tooling. The 2025–2026 AI additions (auto-categorization, agent automations, Code Intelligence) add genuine value without cluttering the interface.

The catch

Per-seat pricing scales steeply for larger teams, and Linear deliberately limits scope — no Gantt charts, no time-tracking, no CRM-style fields. Teams needing breadth will hit walls Jira or ClickUp don't have.

Best for
Engineering teams who want speed and minimalism over feature sprawl
Teams with active GitHub/GitLab workflows wanting native Git integration
Product-led teams running lightweight agile sprints (Cycles)
Not good for
Large enterprises needing complex permission hierarchies or legacy ITSM workflows
Non-technical teams that need time-tracking, Gantt views, or CRM-style fields
Teams on a tight budget scaling beyond 20+ seats
Friction report
Time to value
Fast: workspace setup and first issue board take under 10 minutes; no credit card required for free tier.
Scale breakpoint
Per-seat costs become significant at 20+ users; Business tier at $16/seat/mo adds up quickly for larger orgs.
Walled garden
Moderate: CSV/API exports exist and GitHub sync is solid, but workflows, cycles, and roadmaps are Linear-native constructs with no universal standard to migrate to.
