What it really is

Grafana — open-source observability platform for metrics, logs, and traces.

Our take

Grafana is the de facto industry standard for infrastructure monitoring and observability dashboards, supporting Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, and hundreds of data-source plugins. The DB category of 'SEO' is completely wrong — this is a DevOps/observability platform. The DB entry price of $29 is also off; Grafana Cloud Pro starts at a $19/month platform fee plus usage, and a genuine free cloud tier exists with no credit card required.

Why we rate it

Grafana's plugin ecosystem and open-source model have made it the default choice for observability. Cloud Free removes all cost barriers for small teams while usage-based Pro scales smoothly.

The catch

Usage-based Cloud pricing is complex to forecast; self-hosted deployments require significant DevOps expertise to maintain at scale.

Best for
DevOps and SRE teams monitoring Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure
Engineering orgs standardising on a unified observability stack
Cost-conscious teams wanting free self-hosted dashboards
Not good for
Non-technical teams needing no-code BI dashboards
Organizations wanting simple APM without PromQL configuration
Teams needing built-in incident management and on-call routing
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: Cloud free tier is fast to start; connecting data sources and building dashboards takes hours.
Scale breakpoint
Cloud billing complexity grows quickly past 100K metric series; self-hosted HA setup requires dedicated platform engineers.
Walled garden
Low: Grafana is open-source; dashboards export as JSON; self-hosting is always an option.
