What it really is

BILL Spend & Expense (formerly Divvy) — free corporate card and expense management platform.

Our take

The DB had Divvy priced at $120/month under a 'free trial' tier, and mislabeled it as omnichannel customer-experience software — both are wrong. Divvy was acquired by BILL and rebranded as BILL Spend & Expense; the core platform is free ($0/user/mo), funded by interchange fees when teams use the corporate cards. A Pro tier adds custom fields and enhanced support at $5/user/mo; Enterprise is custom-quoted. It's a spend management and expense tracking tool for finance teams, not a support platform.

Why we rate it

Delivering a genuinely free, full-featured spend management suite funded by interchange fees is a rare structural advantage. Competitors charge $5–$15/user/mo for comparable features, making BILL Spend & Expense a compelling default for cost-conscious finance teams.

The catch

Requires a BILL credit line approval to issue cards — businesses with thin credit history may be declined or receive low limits. The free model means BILL profits from your card spend, so heavy users with negotiated low interchange could feel the platform under-invests in features over time.

Best for
SMB finance teams wanting free corporate card + expense controls
Companies replacing manual expense reports with real-time card limits
Teams already in the BILL ecosystem (AP/AR + spend in one platform)
Not good for
Businesses needing advanced travel booking or ERP-native workflows
Companies with poor credit unable to obtain a BILL card line
Enterprises requiring granular multi-entity consolidation out of the box
Friction report
Time to value
Moderate: signup is fast but requires credit approval before cards are issued; once approved, card distribution and budget setup are quick.
Scale breakpoint
At 50+ users, lack of advanced reporting on the free tier and per-user Pro costs start to add up; large enterprises may need custom Enterprise terms.
Walled garden
Moderate: expense data exports exist, but card limits and spend programs are tied to the BILL ecosystem, making migration non-trivial.
