What it really is

Codeium (now Devin Desktop) — AI coding assistant with autocomplete, agentic chat, and a VS Code-based editor.

Our take

The DB summary mislabels this as an 'AI image generation platform' — it is actually an AI coding assistant. Originally launched as Codeium (free autocomplete tool), it rebranded to Windsurf in late 2024 when it launched an agentic VS Code-fork editor called Cascade, then was acquired by Cognition and rebranded to Devin Desktop in June 2026. The free tier remains one of the most generous in the space: unlimited inline edits and Tab completions at no cost, with paid plans unlocking frontier models (Claude, GPT-4o, Gemini) and higher agentic quotas.

Why we rate it

Codeium pioneered the 'free forever' model that forced GitHub Copilot and others to respond. The Cascade agentic engine handles real multi-step coding tasks — not just completions — and the free tier genuinely competes with paid rivals on core autocomplete quality.

The catch

Three rebrands in under two years (Codeium → Windsurf → Devin Desktop) create product-continuity anxiety. Agentic quota limits bite hard on the free and Pro tiers for heavy workflows. The product is now owned by Cognition (makers of the autonomous Devin agent), whose long-term roadmap may shift focus away from the editor product.

Best for
Solo developers wanting zero-cost AI autocomplete across 70+ languages
Teams evaluating agentic AI coding before committing to paid tooling
VS Code users wanting a drop-in AI-enhanced editor (Windsurf/Devin Desktop)
Not good for
Enterprise teams requiring stable, single-brand tooling over multi-year procurement cycles
Developers needing deep GitHub/GitLab workflow integration (Copilot fits better)
Intensive agentic use cases on a budget — quotas exhaust quickly below Max tier
Friction report
Time to value
Fast — sign up and receive first AI completion in under 5 minutes; VS Code users can install the plugin without switching editors.
Scale breakpoint
Agentic quotas become a bottleneck for teams running frequent multi-step tasks; Max tier ($200/mo) needed for heavy agent workflows.
Walled garden
Moderate — the Windsurf/Devin Desktop editor is a VS Code fork (portable codebase), but Cascade context, flows, and settings are ecosystem-specific.
